About the role

The purpose of the AI Engineer role at GBRX is to design, develop, and implement intelligent systems and solutions that drive transformation across the railway sector. The role leverages expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning to create algorithms that enhance operational efficiency and inform strategic decision-making. It offers a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies in a collaborative environment dedicated to delivering meaningful change across the rail industry.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develops full-stack AI capabilities (including design, build, testing, and optimisation) by creating models and algorithms that enhance existing business processes and leverage complex operational and infrastructure datasets.

  • Translates industry and stakeholder requirements to inform the user-centred design of AI-enabled technical solutions, supporting the deployment of systems that meet operational needs and add measurable value.

  • Maintains and enhances CI/CD pipelines to automate the deployment, testing, and monitoring of AI applications, enabling consistent, reliable, and high-quality software delivery.

  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to architect and implement data pipelines and integration frameworks that combine disparate data sources into cohesive, scalable solutions.

  • Utilises Azure and/or AWS cloud platform components to deploy, manage, and scale AI applications, ensuring robust performance, security, and operational resilience in production environments.

  • Develops and optimises machine learning solutions that forecast operational performance and provide evidence-based insights to support strategic planning, asset management, maintenance, and customer service initiatives.

  • Operate within governance frameworks and apply security controls for AI applications, maintaining adherence to organisational standards and industry best practices. Responsibilities include managing access, monitoring vulnerabilities, and upholding ethical principles in AI deployment .

  • Engages in continuous learning and experimentation to stay current with emerging AI methodologies, tools, and technologies, proactively incorporating new techniques into solution development.

  • Communicates technical findings, solution performance, and insights to stakeholders through clear, accessible presentations and documentation, supporting strategic initiatives and fostering innovation across the organisation.

  • Develop and maintain processes for continuous integration, automated testing, and version control of AI models in production environments. Oversee that models are retrained, validated, and optimised to maintain accuracy, scalability, and resilience over time.

Your experience and skills

Essential

  • Significant and Proven experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python or .NET, with experience in AI frameworks and data visualization tools.
  • Comprehensive solution requirement capture experience, including knowledge of MoSCoW (or similar) methodologies.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD practices and tools (e.g., Jenkins, Azure DevOps) for automating software delivery processes.
  • Experience with cloud platforms and their components (e.g., Azure Machine Learning, Azure Data Factory, AWS, GCP) for deploying and managing AI solutions.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, innovative thinking and a collaborative mindset

Desirable

  • Familiarity with the railway sector and its operational challenges is a plus.
  • A degree (or equivalent qualification) in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) or a closely related field such as Data Science, Computer Science, or Statistics.
