Niyam is seeking an experienced AI Engineer to support one of our federal clients. The AI Engineer will support the development, integration, and sustainment of AI-enabled capabilities within a secure mobile and cloud-based application in a federal environment. Working as part of a cross-functional Agile team, this role will focus on implementing and maintaining generative AI features, including LLM-powered services and retrieval-augmented generation solutions, under the guidance of senior technical leadership. The AI Engineer will contribute to day-to-day development, deployment, and operational support activities while following established DevSecOps, security, and compliance practices. **This position will be onsite at client location in Ashburn, VA three (3) days per week.

Roles and Responsibilities:**

  • Support the development and maintenance of AI-enabled features within a secure mobile and cloud-based application as part of a cross-functional Agile team.
  • Implement and integrate generative AI components, including prompt-based workflows and LLM-powered services, under the guidance of the Solution Architect or Technical Lead.
  • Assist in building and maintaining retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) solutions using embeddings and vector stores to support semantic search and data retrieval use cases.
  • Deploy and operate AI/ML models using managed cloud platforms such as Vertex AI, AWS SageMaker, or Azure ML, following established deployment and monitoring patterns.
  • Develop Python-based services and scripts using approved coding standards, version control practices, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and complete assigned tasks within sprint timelines, contributing to team deliverables and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Follow established DevSecOps, security, and privacy requirements when developing and operating AI solutions in a federal environment.
  • Document technical implementations and operational procedures to support system sustainment, audits, and knowledge sharing.
  • Support demonstrations of the solutions or technologies under consideration to internal and/or client teams.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • US Citizenship with ability to successfully complete a federal background investigation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or related field (equivalent practical experience may be considered).
  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated ownership of production systems.
  • Strong understanding of modern generative AI systems, including LLM architectures, training vs inference tradeoffs, and prompt and agent design.
  • Hands on experience with Vertex AI or equivalent platforms such as SageMaker or Azure ML for model deployment, monitoring, and scaling.
  • Experience building LLM-powered applications using embeddings and vector stores for retrieval-augmented generation and semantic search.
  • Strong understanding of AI ethics, bias mitigation, and explainability.
  • Proficiency in Python with strong software engineering fundamentals including testing, version control, and CI/CD.
  • Experience optimizing latency, cost, and reliability of AI services in distributed production environments.
  • Ability to reason about model limitations, data quality, security, and privacy in real-world AI deployments.
