Overview
Heretic Ventures is a San Francisco-based venture studio ideating and launching new businesses in the creator economy, including those that capitalize on AI/ML technology. Heretic is run by Managing Partner Mariam Naficy, who founded and built the pioneering internet companies Minted and Eve.com. Heretic is backed by household names in Silicon Valley (investors and entrepreneurs), who act as the studio’s advisors both in selecting and in advising companies.
The studio will develop and test multiple ideas and will found and launch 2-3 companies over the course of two years in the area of AI-driven commerce.
Heretic has an immediate opening for a Research Engineer who will lead the development of the AI backbone of these companies.
A successful candidate has experience and a breadth of knowledge in python, data engineering, the development, training and tuning of AI models, and integration of said models into applications.
In this entrepreneurial and technical role, you will partner with Mariam and the studio team to evaluate the commercial viability of ideas along with the feasibility of implementation. The role is compensated with a mix of salary, carry in the fund’s investments, and equity stakes in all companies created by the Studio.
Responsibilities
- AI strategy:
- Partner closely with the business strategy teams to understand the AI needs for the various business ideas
- Be aware of different and recommend options for implementing, developing, or tuning the models that are needed to drive the various business ideas (This includes keeping up-to-date with the latest developments in academia and industry)
- Develop proof concepts that prove out the most promising approaches
- Work with 3rd party AI providers to enhance their capabilities as needed
- Implementation:
- Advise engineering teams of portfolio companies on implementation strategy
- Drive the continual tuning and training of models to maximize business value
Minimum Qualifications
- 4-7 years work experience
- Strong knowledge of Python
- Experience with environment configuration for AI models, including working with GPU configurations
- Experience with prompting, few-shot learning, and large language models
- Broadly knowledgeable about different AI platforms, their capabilities, and their tradeoffs
