Role overview

Build and maintain backend systems and AI-powered features. You'll work closely with the Staff/Lead Engineer on backend architecture and AI initiatives, contributing to critical features that help disaster survivors access federal assistance programs. You'll develop robust APIs and services that process disaster data, calculate eligibility for federal programs, and integrate with AI systems to automate complex workflows. You'll work with large-scale databases, real-time data processing, and AI models to build features that make government assistance accessible. You'll collaborate with frontend engineers to deliver seamless user experiences, work with compliance teams to ensure security and regulatory requirements are met and contribute to architecture decisions that shape the platform's future. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge AI technology while solving real-world problems that impact people's lives during their most vulnerable moments.

Responsibilities

  • Backend Development : Build and maintain APIs, services, and data processing pipelines.
  • AI Integration : Develop AI-powered features using Claude Code and LLM APIs.
  • Database Work : Design queries, optimize performance, and manage data migrations.
  • System Design : Contribute to architecture decisions and design scalable solutions.
  • Code Quality : Write clean, maintainable code and participate in code reviews.
  • Collaboration : Work with front-end engineers, product managers, and compliance teams.

Basic qualifications

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Experience using FedRAMP
  • Experience with AI/ML systems, LLM integration, or agentic AI tools.
  • Strong 0 to 1 (from scratch) product development experience
  • Strong backend expertise in Python and Go.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and database design.
  • Experience with AWS services (Lambda, S3, RDS, etc.).
  • Experience building RESTful APIs and microservices.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
  • Startup experience - adaptable, team-player attitude. No jerks.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with Claude Code or similar AI coding assistants.
  • Experience with Terraform or Infrastructure as Code.
  • Experience with TypeScript/JavaScript (full-stack capability).
  • Experience with compliance/security requirements (SOC-2, FedRAMP).
  • Experience with regulated industries or government contracts.
