About The Role
Waymo is seeking a talented and experienced Machine Learning Engineer to join the Mapping team, focusing on automating the creation of high-definition maps that are critical for safe autonomous driving. In this role, you will design, develop, and deploy advanced machine learning models to streamline and scale the mapping process, enabling the Waymo Driver to operate more efficiently across diverse environments. You will work on cutting-edge ML techniques, including Vision-Language Models and Generative AI, to pioneer new solutions in mapping automation. This position offers an opportunity to own the entire model development lifecycle—from data collection and processing to training, evaluation, validation, and deployment—collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to integrate research into scalable, production-ready systems. Your contributions will directly impact Waymo’s mission to make autonomous driving safer and more accessible for everyone.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in Machine Learning, with a focus on computer vision and/or deep learning
  • Proficiency in at least one major deep learning framework such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or JAX
  • Strong understanding of machine learning model development lifecycle, including data mining, training, evaluation, and deployment
  • B.S. degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience

Responsibilities

  • Design, train, and deploy machine learning models to automate the creation of high-resolution maps for autonomous driving applications
  • Apply and innovate using state-of-the-art ML techniques, including Vision-Language Models and Generative AI approaches, to improve mapping automation
  • Own the end-to-end development process, from data collection and preprocessing to model evaluation, validation, and production deployment
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including perception and AI foundation groups, to integrate cutting-edge research into scalable solutions
  • Continuously improve models based on performance metrics and real-world testing, ensuring robustness and reliability
  • Document methodologies, results, and best practices to facilitate knowledge sharing within the team
