In this role, you’ll help build and operate scalable, reliable systems for creating, storing, and serving ML features and embeddings that power discovery, ranking, and personalization across Etsy. You’ll collaborate closely with ML practitioners and platform engineers to improve developer experience, system performance, and model impact. This is a great opportunity to grow your ML infrastructure skills while contributing to high-impact, company-wide capabilities.This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineer Manager, Feature and Embeddings Infra team. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. The team is part of the Machine Learning Enablement (MLE) organization, which builds the tools and platforms that power machine learning systems company-wide.
We’re a mid-sized, geographically distributed team made up primarily of senior and staff engineers, creating strong opportunities for mentorship, learning, and career growth.
We design and maintain infrastructure for feature creation, storage, retrieval, and embedding workflows that power personalized search, recommendations, and other ML-driven experiences at Etsy.
Our systems support millions of buyers and sellers, giving early-career engineers the opportunity to work on high-impact, production ML infrastructure.

What does the day-to-day look like?
Write high-quality Scala and Python code while participating in code reviews and pair programming to learn best practices and improve system reliability.
Collaborate with senior engineers to build and maintain production services and data pipelines for feature creation, storage, and embedding workflows.
Work cross-functionally with applied scientists to understand how teams develop and use ML models, and help translate those needs into clear technical requirements.
Proactively share progress, surface risks, and ask for help when needed to ensure timely delivery of assigned work.
Participate in technical design discussions and gradually take ownership of well-scoped components or projects with mentorship and guidance.
Learn and apply the skills, behaviors, and knowledge needed to be an effective, collaborative engineer, including operational excellence, testing, and on-call support.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
Strong foundational programming skills and a desire to write clear, maintainable code in languages such as Scala and Python.
Experience with machine learning systems and infrastructure, with interest in learning how large-scale ML platforms are built and operated.
A collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, applied scientists, and partner teams.
Willingness to ask questions, seek feedback, and learn from code reviews, pair programming, and mentorship.
Clear and proactive communication habits, including sharing progress, raising concerns early, and asking for help when needed.
Comfort working on well-scoped problems while gradually building ownership and technical confidence.
