Your role and responsibilities

In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute to ABB's success with technology, software, product, and system development. Each day, you will identify and implement innovative solutions to relevant problems. You will also showcase your expertise by providing ideas and by being able to work both independently and as a part of a Research & Development (R&D) team.

This is a temporarily employed position, reports to Robotics research team manager. You will be mainly accountable for:

  • You will be part of creating new technologies that are crucial for the factory-of-the-future in discrete manufacturing. More specifically, the focus will be mainly in software development for autonomous robots using computer vision and artificial intelligence.
  • The candidate is expected to have in-depth knowledge and rich experience in implementing software into robotics systems, to explore autonomous robot manipulation scenarios under semi-structured environment.
  • This requires good theoretical knowledge and experience in the fields of software engineering, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Good understanding in robot applications both in simulation and with real robots.
  • You are expected to drive specific activities to successful conclusion while following a visionary continuity in your work. To succeed in this position, you should be capable of working both independently and in a team. You will be working in an international environment. It is therefore required that you have good communication skills in English.

Qualifications for the role

  • Have a MSc or PhD degree of education in the subjects of robotics, computer science or artificial intelligence.
  • 2-5 years experience in developing software for robotics or computer vision is required.
  • Demonstrated experience working in robotics, either in simulation or with physical robots.
  • Demonstrated experience working on computer vision.
  • Knowledge and experience with ROS 2 is considered an advantage.
  • Deep knowledge in Linux (Ubuntu) is considered an advantage.
  • Knowledge of modern software development practices such as git/agile/continuous integration is considered an advantage..

You will be part of the research team at ABB Robotics in Västerås, Sweden. In our role as ABB Robotics Research, we ensure ABB Robotics' technology competitiveness now and in future.

In the Robotics research team we focus on mechatronics concepts, design and robot intelligence in both industrial and service robot segments. Our research activities usually formulated as technology pre-study and technology development projects. We work closely with ABB's robotics business to ensure our research will bring unique value for ABB Robotics. At the same time, we have close collaboration with academic world to bridge the academic and industrial research. In this team, one of our historical highlights is the creation and development of the dual-arm YuMi robot concept and the mobile YuMi concept.
